Skin Hydration Mistakes We Do and Solutions for It

Good hydration is important in skin care — without it, your complexion can become dry, itchy, dull and overall uncomfortable. We probably don’t need to tell you, especially now in winter: dry air can deprive your skin of valuable moisture; if you’ve ever had to deal with flaky and cracked winter skin, you know how important it is to butter your skin barrier.

So you need to moisturize your skin. Note. But immerse your skin in the moisture it needs and keep it there are two very different companies. Have you ever spent a lot of time on your moisturizing treatments to find your skin just as dehydrated in the morning? Because the same thing.

Well, it turns out that a few innocent mistakes can easily sabotage a rosy gloss. If you brush creams and serums with hyaluronic acid to no avail, make sure that you do not unknowingly make one of the following missteps:

1. You ignore the hydration of the whole body.

You are not alone: many people who take care of their skin carefully can be a little LAX when it comes to personal hygiene. In the beauty industry, a large part of the focus is on the face, as it is the most visible part of your skin and is often more sensitive than other areas of the body.

But to completely ignore personal care is a shame, not least because the market has practically exploded over the years — with formulas that compete with their facial treatment counterparts. You can find a body lotion as decadent as a gentle night cream for pillows, a hand treatment that helps fade dark spots like a lightening serum. And of course: your skin barrier does not end at the neck, and moisture plays an important role in its functioning. Ignore the hydration of the whole body, endanger your barrier, and your skin will not be so protected from external aggressors – over time, this can lead to premature aging, fine lines and frizzy skin.

The fix.

Consider this your sign to invest in personal hygiene and give the skin much-needed moisture. Just as you might opt for a thicker moisturizer to ensure a fresh face this winter, it’s important to do the same for your body’s skin. 2. You use warm water.

A wet rinse may be pleasant at the moment, but you’re probably not doing much favors to your skin barrier. Why? “Hot water evaporates faster,” says certified dermatologist Purvisha Patel, MD, founder of Visha Skincare, which means you don’t have to lock up as much time in the water after rinsing. And if the water evaporates from your skin before you can wrap it with a moisturizer, your complexion will be even drier than before.

Burning water also has the ability to remove natural oils and lipids from your skin, affecting your skin barrier — and this, as already mentioned, can lead to cracking and itching of the skin.

The fix.

Many dermos recommend sticking to warm or slightly lukewarm water when showering or washing your face, if you can. Especially in the winter months, as the cold can already weaken your skin barrier function, so you do not want to aggravate it further.

3. They do not moisturize the damp skin.

“After cleansing, you want to include all this watery goodness,” explains council-certified dermatologist Angelo Landriscina, MD, in a TikTok video. “Humectants in your products, such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin, will have an easier time retaining moisture if you provide them.”Remember: humectants draw water from the environment to moisturize your skin, so keeping your skin moist can help you find the moisture you need.

In addition, you may have a slightly smaller window to lock in moisture, especially if you are biased towards long, warm showers and completely eliminate the victims of some of the precious minutes you have at your disposal (council-certified dermatologist Whitney Bowe, MD, recommends not waiting more than two minutes to apply a moisturizer).

The fix.

As you can probably guess: apply your moisturizing products to damp skin. After cleansing, simply blot your skin with a towel until it is damp (you can always blot your skin, but not until it is completely dry), and then apply a cream filled with humectant to lock in moisture. “I promise you it will leave you bright and beautiful,” says Landriscina.
